Samhain, All Hallow’s Eve, Halloween – this is a time of year when many traditions believe the veil between the world is thin and focus on honoring those who have crossed to the other side. Samhain (pronounced Sow-en) is an ancient Celtic tradition reclaimed by many practitioners of pagan and other Earth-reverent traditions. At Samhain, we both honor the ancestors and attune our own energies to the coming darkness of Winter, turning within for a time of introspection and personal spiritual growth. Spooky stuff, pumpkins, witches (what on earth is funny about burning women alive??) is a modern commercial appropriation designed to sell stuff just like Xmas and Easter. All of this turns us away from the reality of Death and of honoring those who have died. Want to do something more meaningful? Create an alter to those who have gone before, tell stories about those you love who have died. Remember them.
